Frank Lampard’s team take on Palace on Sunday after more-boosting win over NewcastleEverton manager Frank Lampard was cautiously optimistic as he aimed to build on a morale-boosting win over Newcastle in the club’s bid to save their season.
Everton are locked in a Premier League relegation battle with Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final at Crystal Palace possibly a distraction, but Lampard hopes gaining any sort of momentum can be beneficial. Thursday’s win was just the club’s fifth in all competitions since September with the manager stating that the boost it had given the squad should not be wasted. “When you have a night like we had on Thursday, it’s important you take the benefits from it, which is an understanding of what winning feels like,” Lampard was quoted as saying by the Press Association. “Here this season, we haven’t won enough games. There has been a losing feeling too much. The winning feeling and the togetherness and effort that goes into that is an important thing to move forward with. “I don’t want to lean on that too much, though, because since I’ve been here, we’ve had some good wins and good performances that we haven’t backed up. We’ve got three points but that doesn’t mean we’re fine. We’re not. Hopefully the Newcastle win can be a change for us, but we have to make it work. “One night like that is nothing on its own. Now the challenge is to back it up. To find that consistency in performance is the next step for us.” Alex Iwobi scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time against Newcastle United. Everton had been reduced to 10 men following a red card for midfielder Allan on 83 minutes but, roared on by a vociferous home crowd, found a winning moment as Iwobi combined with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and side-footed the ball into the net. Everton move three points clear of the relegation zone with 25 points from 27 games, while Newcastle are in 14th place with 31 points from 29 matches. Meanwhile, Patrick Vieira talked about the positivity around Crystal Palace ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Everton. The Eagles are in the midst of a five-match unbeaten run, having held Premier League leaders Manchester City to a 0–0 draw on Monday. Palace are 11th in the standings with nine games to go but the focus now is on FA Cup. “There is a positive vibe around the football club about the confidence the players and staff have at the moment,” he said. “We know how challenging it is and how difficult it is to maintain performances or win games against Premier League teams. “We try to be really consistent in our behaviour and mood. When things are going well we’re the same as when things are not going as well as we wanted.”

The senior Emirati official says a practical and logical approach can be used without compromising the efforts of those who are working to restore peaceDr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Khalifa, said on Saturday the UAE continues to adopt a realistic policy that can help reduce tensions in the region.
The senior Emirati official said communication and dialogue can resolve crises in the Arab world. Dr Gargash tweeted a “practical and logical approach” can be used without compromising the efforts of those who are working to reduce strife. He said Syrian President Bashar Al Assad’s visit to the UAE on Friday was an example. The Emirates want to play an important role in reducing tensions in Syria and believe political communication, openness and dialogue can work to restore peace. The Russian TV producer who held up an anti-war sign during a live broadcast is an outlier in not just her homeland.YOU’D NEED A heart made of granite not to be moved by Marina Ovsyannikova, the Russian television producer who on Monday jumped onto the set of the state-run network Channel One during a live broadcast and shouted, “Stop the war, no to war!”
Perhaps the most touching aspect of Ovsyannikova’s action was the nature of the sign she held, which featured small Ukrainian and Russian flags and the words “No war. Stop the war. Don’t believe propaganda. They lie to you here. Russians against war.” It wasn’t a slickly designed placard, produced by graphic designers paid by an NGO funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. Instead, it was hand-drawn, with some letters getting narrower near the right margin as she realized she was running out of space. Did she make this at home on her dining room table? Did she have an office at work with a door she could lock? At some point the paper had clearly been rolled up in a tube because as Ovsyannikova held it up, it was trying to curl back on itself. So this was a single solitary person — maybe with a small support network — realizing that she had the means (an understanding of reality), the motive (telling the truth about matters of life and death), and the opportunity (access to a live TV broadcast) to take a stand, making international news. And while it’s impossible to know how many Russians know what Ovsyannikova did, given the severe clampdown currently taking place there, it seems implausible that the video has been completely prevented from filtering back from overseas. But where are the other Marina Ovsyannikovas? There must be thousands of individuals across the world with the same means, motive, and opportunity. And while many countries have far less repressive media environments than Russia, the opportunities anywhere to challenge stultifying government and corporate propaganda on TV are still few and far between. For instance, there were exactly zero questions during the 2020 U.S. primary and general election debates about the U.S. drone program. In 2019, the main nightly and Sunday news programs spent a munificent 0.7 percent of their airtime on the climate crisis. Both subjects cry out for some Ovsyannikova-style treatment. The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and BSE will remain closed on March 18 on account of Holi. Wholesale commodity markets, including metal and bullion, will also remain shut. There will be no trading activity in the forex and commodity futures markets either. On March 17, the Sensex ended 1,047.28 points, or 1.84 percent higher, at 57,863.93, and the Nifty was up 311.70 points, or 1.84 percent, at 17,287. However, for the week BSE Sensex rose 2,313.63 points (4.16 percent) to end at 57,863.93 , while the Nifty50 added 656.6 points (3.94 percent) to end at 17,287.05 levels. HDFC, JSW Steel, Titan Company, SBI Life Insurance and Kotak Mahindra Bank were among the top Nifty gainers, while losers were Infosys, Cipla, IOC, Coal India and HCL Technologies. All sectoral indices ended in the green, with Nifty auto and energy indices rising 2 percent each, while Bank, FMCG, pharma and metal rose over a percent each. Broader indices underperformed the main indices, with BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gaining over a percent each. “Nifty bulls celebrated Holi with green while short sellers got squeezed. The auspicious occasion of Holi was celebrated at Dalal Street as the benchmark Nifty enjoyed yet another session of strong gains and most importantly, was seen racing to hit the magical 17,500 mark,” said Prashanth Tapse, Vice President (Research), Mehta Equities. “The technical landscape has turned aggressively bullish. This optimistic backdrop should take Nifty easily to its magical goalpost at 17500 mark and then aggressive targets at 18000 mark,” he added. Indian rupee ended 46 paise higher at 75.80 per dollar on Thursday against Wednesday’s close of 76.26. “USDINR spot closed 47 paise lower at 75.79 on the back of long liquidation and selling from large exporters. The US Fed was hawkish but they were in line with market expectations. This allowed for profit booking,” said Anindya Banerjee, VP, Currency Derivatives & Interest Rate Derivatives at Kotak Securities. “At the same time, being so close to the financial year end, $ selling from corporates tends to increase. Once 76 broke on spot, hedgers emerged.” “We need to keep an eye on oil as Brent crude has bounced from 96 dollars a barrel and can once again move higher. If oil moves higher next week, then USDINR may not see much of a downside. We expect a range bound trading over the next week, between 75.50 and 76.30 on spot,” he added. About 70 per cent of expo visitors have been from the UAEExpo 2020 Dubai has reached an impressive milestone of 20 million visits, as the mega event nears the finish line.
The achievement will be celebrated on Saturday at 8.30pm, with a special projection on Al Wasl dome and a fireworks show. Scores of people have been rushing to the world’s fair in Dubai South, with only 12 days left until the expo closes its doors. About 70 per cent of the total expo visitors have been from the UAE. The latest figures also show children under the age of 18 have visited more than 2.8 million times. Total visits include virtual numbers. Organisers said the expo hit the milestone of 20 million visits on Saturday, calling it “an amazing achievement” and “bringing the world together in the UAE for the largest global gathering since the start of the pandemic”. “When we started this journey in 2013, and even before then as we prepared the bid for Expo 2020 Dubai, we had a dream to welcome the world to Dubai and the UAE for an unprecedented global gathering that would live long in hearts and minds,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed, chairman of the expo’s higher committee. “That we have fulfilled this dream is already beyond doubt, but to achieve such a landmark number of visits is true testament to how the world has responded to what we have worked so long and hard to create. “We trust that those millions of people will take their memories back to their families and friends, wherever they are from in the world, to continue the impressive work we have set in motion at Expo 2020 Dubai.” Since opening its doors to travellers from all over the world, the expo has provided cultural, educational and entertainment experiences, including 192 country pavilions that are showing the best of what their nations offer. There have been about 32,000 events and attractions so far that have involved world leaders, cutting-edge innovations, sporting heroes, Grammy-award winning artists, incredible architecture, Arab superstars and innovative forums. The ban, and other measures taken last week by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, has highlighted the huge price increases across Canada’s real estate market, where prices have soared by more than 50 per cent just in the past two years. The government announced theban on foreign home buying and higher taxes for people who sell their home within a year, although both measures hold exceptions, including for permanent residents and foreign students.Home prices have surged more than 50 per cent over the past two years and the housing market had a record monthly increase in February as buyers acted before rate increases by the Bank of Canada, taking the benchmark price of a home to the equivalent of US$693,000, according to Bloomberg. Would-be homeowners in Canada have long been exasperated by the country’s home-buying rules, including the practice of “blind bidding” where offers are kept secret when someone is selling a home. Some believe that secret bidding forces each potential buyer to offer as much as they can, and the practice has been blamed for accelerating price gains. Properties often sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars over the asking price. “The bid war is crazy," said Ritika, a first-time homebuyer who goes by one name. "You will see a house listed for C$500,000 ($395,875) and you will place a bid for C$800,000 thinking that you will easily make it. "But suddenly some unknown investor with deep pockets will jump in and buy it for $1 million."Ritika, who moved from Dubai to Canada last year, says the government must regulate the market and take control of the situation. “Agents do not disclose the other bids and leave you disgusted and waiting hopelessly,” she told The National. The foreign buyer moratorium indicates that Mr Trudeau is becoming more assertive about taming one of the developed world’s most expensive housing markets, and that the government is growing more concerned about the political backlash to inflation and the rising cost of housing. Ajay Sharma, a Toronto sales representative at Royal LePage, one of the oldest real estate companies in Canada, said the government was under immense pressure to cool the real estate market, which he described as having followed a “reckless trajectory”. “Recent decisions are more of a damage control exercise by the Canadian government,” Mr Sharma told The National.“They seem more inclined towards pleasing voters and winning their confidence and votes. "They will not yield long-term benefits as currently the real estate market is struggling with the lack of inventory and a severe shortage of supplies.” Gagandeep Singh Soodan, another first-time homebuyer, considers himself lucky to get a house of his choice after repeated bids. Mr Soodan described property purchases as a “frustrating” experience for many first-time homebuyers in Canada. The government should be “more proactive in safeguarding the interests of genuine home buyers and it would be great to see stricter measures in the coming months", Mr Soodan, said who works with a global digital advisory firm, told The National. Many homeowners have seen prices of their properties more than triple in the past three to four years. For example, a 1,850 square-foot townhouse in the Waterloo community, which was priced somewhere between C$250,000 to C$300,000 in 2018, sold for more than C$850,000 in recent months. Rents also have sky-rocketed. “I am paying $2,300 a month as a rent as a rent for a nearly 2,000 square foot townhouse … the same was available for $1,000 to $1,200 a month in 2020," said Tim Langer, a software engineer who moved from California to Waterloo last year. "If you go nearer to Toronto in cities like Milton, Brampton and Mississauga, the rental market is even worse." But a resident from Chatham, Ontario noted that foreign buyers only make up a small percentage of sales. "The restriction on foreign buyers will have no impact on the housing market and prices," said the former government worker, asking for anonymity. "Home prices in Canada are very reasonable when they are compared to other developed countries, and in most cases homes here are less than other developed countries." Anurag Batra says that the Business world is a Business Media platform but business recycling also has an impact on the environment and as we move towards sustainability, the last 21 months have taught us that all of us are more connected and what happened in one part of the world impacts all of us. He thinks the value of sustainability and recycling is becoming more and more important and each stakeholder is taking his or her duty of contributing to a better greener environmentand to a greener economy that is sustainable over time. The recycling summit for a greener tomorrow is an initiative by the BW business world in that direction to be able to contribute to the consciousness of recycling and sustainability. People today can understand the recycling domain and the business domain. When broadly contextualised, we don’t think of recycling as a business and we don’t think that recycling can be done in many forms and with many materials, says Anurag Batra. Thebiggest recycling material is the second most important item, which is aluminium. It is the second most recycled metal globally.Aluminiumcans, industrial scrap and household aluminium are good propositions for creating a business by aluminium recycling.
Anurag Batra ranks battery as the next big opportunity.Batteries can be broken down into 7 basic identities lead acids, carbon-zinc, alkaline NMIAH,NICAD,lithium-ion and zinc. All these have good market in terms of recycling. The other is bookbinding and repair.Old and broken bookbindingis a good business to start from home. A lot of people have started it from home and selling them to printing offices. Next, is the cartridges used for printing.Nowadays people use printers a lot so cartridges have become an important part of our life, especially in a business environment. cartridge refilling businesses are about providing ink and toner cartridge refilling service to your client instead of buying a new one. it is also beneficial for the environment as it contributes to reducing e-waste. Construction waste like wood, nails, screws, plaster, drywall concrete rocks, ceramic tiles, flooring, particleboard electrical wires so on can be recycled and used.Construction waste is another item for recycling. Electric wires are conducting material wrapped in plastic insulation. The most common metal use electric wires copper and aluminium. So from electric wires recycling can be done and it can be in the plastic format of polymer. Most of the hotel restaurants have cooking oil in the kitchens. It is collected and is used in recycling. The major recycling material is e-waste and a lot of people are doing therecycling of it.Then comes, gold, the eco-friendly paper which is being used by a lot ofenvironmentally conscious people. Plastic, tyre, used children’sclothing, wood recycling etc can be done. The point AnuragBatra is trying to make is, in our everyday lives, in our business and work, there are opportunities forrecycling. If we take a count there are almost 100 recycling start ups in India. Thereare large businesses that have been built around recycling but recycling is not just a business. It is a way to make social impact and to make sure that we make our environment more sustainable. Anurag Batra also use this opportunity to highlight that the second edition of the BW business world, India’s most sustainable companies in association with sustain labs Paris will be again coming out this year.It is already conducting the jurymeetand will validate the sustain labs Paris research findingsand will bring out the India’s most sustainable ranking. BW business world are doing are bit to make sure that amongst ecosystem they are able to bring out matrix that reward companies that make sustainability and recycling part of their business strategy. Belarus has also been banned amid the invasion of Ukraine and will be replaced by BelgiumThe International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced on Monday that Australia will replace the suspended Russia team in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
Russia was banned from defending its Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup titles following the country’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine. Belarus, a key staging area for the invasion, which Russia says is a “special operation”, has also been banned from the international team competitions. The Australian team were the highest ranked side among the losing semi-finalists in 2021 and will take Russia’s automatic spot in this year’s Finals of the tournament, formerly known as the Fed Cup. Slovakia, who were scheduled to play Australia in next month’s qualifiers for the women’s team event, will get a bye and also advance directly to the 2022 Finals, scheduled to be held in November. Also advancing to the Finals — for which the host country has yet to be named — will be Belgium, after its side received a walkover in the qualifiers due to Belarus’ suspension. The three sides will be joined by the host, last year’s runner-up Switzerland and the remaining seven winners of the qualifiers on April 15–16. In the men’s Davis Cup, also won last year by a Russian team led by top-ranked Daniil Medvedev, Serbia was awarded the automatic spot as the highest-ranked losing semi-finalist. A wildcard for the 2022 Finals that was previously awarded to Serbia will be handed to one of the 12 nations knocked out in the qualifiers earlier this month. The 12 winning teams from the qualifiers, 2021 finalists Croatia and wildcard Britain are the other confirmed sides for the 2022 Finals, which will see 16 nations competing in four groups across four cities from September 14–18. The top eight teams will advance to the knockout stages, which will serve as the season-ending event on the men’s tennis calendar and will be held from Nov. 23–27 in a fifth host city. The host cities for the Davis Cup competition also have not yet been named. The number AA90 fetched the highest amount of Dh2.7 millionA licence plate auction in Dubai on Sunday fetched about Dh30 million, the emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority said.
It was the 109th public auction and was held at the Ritz-Carlton hotel. The number AA90 fetched the highest amount of Dh2.7m. Plate number M73 was sold for Dh2.36m while W55555 and X800 fetched Dh1.71m and Dh1.02m, respectively. Plates on offer had two-, three-, four- and five-digit numbers, with the AA, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X and YZ codes. A plate’s value is determined by the emirate, series and number. Letters high up on the alphabet are usually worth more. Certain letters such as O and W, which is pronounced in Arabic as “wow”, carry a prestige of their own. The agency sold 100 plates and raised Dh36.5m at its previous auction on December 19, 2021. Plate Z 31 was sold for Dh2.82m and V10000 for Dh920,000. W500 and O66666 each fetched Dh840,000. Car number plates garner huge interest among motoring enthusiasts in the UAE. In 2016, Indian businessman Balwinder Sahni paid Dh33 million for plate D5, thought to be the world’s most expensive sale. ![]() As experienced restaurateurs, Tamer Amer and Karim Maurice were acutely aware of the pain points of their business.
“The most challenging part of being a restaurateur in Egypt has been sourcing the supplies due to the inefficient and inconsistent supply chain in our part of the world,” says Mr Amer, a restaurateur with nearly 25 years of experience. “I have waited for years for a Sysco type company to open in Egypt but it didn’t happen, so I decided to do something about it.” The duo founded OneOrder, an online business-to-business platform that facilitates order processing and communication between restaurants and suppliers. Founded in October last year, the Cairo-based company aims to address inefficiencies and structural problems faced by restaurants when sourcing supplies, such as inconsistent prices, unreliable quality and irregular delivery timings. “This type of service did not exist in Egypt before,” Mr Amer explains.
